Using the steps described would normally work, if it was a straightforward diriver issue, but attempting these did not resovle the problem. I took it to a local authorised repair shop and left the computer with them after 24 hrs they could not find a driver problem. When I got my computer back I decided to back the system up and do a fresh install, usually my last action. I did a repair of XP and my scanner connected first time, also my Norton now came up with an error which required an uninstall/install and everything now works.

So I am left wondering what really caused the problem. Thanks again for the replies.
